I've wanted to contribute to scientific communication for a long time. As scientists, we get to learn amazing things about life and our "language" doesn't make it easy for everyone to understand. However, I do think that a lot of people would love to know more about what is being discovered! Now, I hope to finally help by sharing the scientific progresses that make me thrilled to work in science!

6 tags and 0 profile in descriptionToday we're looking at Gay-Lussac's Law. Like Boyle's law, this law is about the properties of an "ideal gas" (a gas that is a perfect child and never does anything unexpected). This law works under the conditions of constant volume. The size of the box does not change, and neither does the amount of gas in the box. Now, if the temperature inside the box increases, G-L's law says that the pressure inside the box will increase as well. The opposite is also true- decreasing temp. and decreasing pressure are linked as well. So why is this? Well, temperature is basically a measurement of ATOMIC HYPE. "What?" The more hyped the atoms (and molecules) in a substance are, the more intensely and spastically they move! And the more spastic the movement, the hotter the substance is overall! I'll let that sink in for tomorrow, when we apply it to G-L's law! Questions? Corrections? Please let me know below! #scienceoutreach #scienceisart #artofscience #sciencecommunication #physics #chemistry

4 tags and 0 profile in descriptionI went to dinner with TYRONE FREAKING HAYES! My life is an animal nerd fairytale. You might not recognize the name (or maybe you do from the slander campaigns against him), but you've probably heard about his work and people you know have been affected by it. UC Berkley professor #tyronehayes is the guy who proved ATRAZINE was CHEMICALLY CASTRATING frogs. Despite decades of nefarious persecution and threats from the chemical company at fault, he continued his research and continued to not only publish in all the most respected academic journals, but also communicate directly with the people OUTSIDE of academics. He and other respected scientists around the world have gone on to prove that Atrazine causes hormonally linked problems in all 5 groups of vertebrates and levels of exposure to it predict cancers and birth defects in humans right here in the USA. This guy is one brave, tough defender of both the environment and the disproportionately affected human communities suffering from contaminated water. His talk was INFORMATIVE AF; even having followed and read much of his work, I learned a lot about #herbicides , #environmentaljustice and effective #sciencecommunication . And then dinner was one of the greatest nights of my life! Fun fact: Tyrone Hayes had a tegu (my main housepets) in his younger days. :D

She studies the role of a multi-faceted protein Sp1 in regulating the process of cell division. High levels of Sp1 is a marker for poor prognosis for some cancers. Due to its multiple functions in the cell, it is not possible to directly target Sp1 . . Her lab's research aims to understand how Sp1 performs its many functions. An understanding of these mechanisms could help us identify a way to target this important protein indirectly, so that we don't completely interrupt all its functions . . She will be sharing some posts detailing the techniques she uses in lab. As part of a national competition (funnily enough called Fresh Science), I'll be heading to Sydney to share my work and undergo media training. Pimping a Southern Ocean (hence the Antarctica-shaped lemon juice) species that is well and truly frowned upon isn't easy, but I think I'm up for the challenge. I can't wait to see what I get out of this experience - If I'm lucky, my 'yeah, nah, yeahs' might even be refined to 'yeah, nahs.' This is a BD.👍 . I'm running several viewsheds for my dissertation, which basically calculate how many times each pixel are seen according to a group of observers. 🚶🚶🚶 . This will help me figure out which structures were the most noticeable. 🔭 From here, I'll start to analyze whether this was intentional, and the cultural significance of such choices. . I'm doing a total approach, where a single observer is placed every 200 meters in my study areas. That's 100k observers for each study area -- and millions of pixels to calculate. 📐 . Running on a normal computer, one computation takes about 450 hours. Power outages means you lose everything (true story). ⏰ . I contacted the Shared Computing Cluster at BU for help. In Holyoke, Ma there is a facility shared by Harvard, BU, and MIT. The system of machines it houses currently includes over 5800 shared CPU cores, over 8700 Buy-in CPU cores, a combined 240,000 GPU cores, and over 4.2 petabytes of storage. Faculty and graduate students can run computationally intensive processes in Linux and finish them in a fraction of the time. . What does this mean for me? 450 hours was reduced to 8. 🙌 . I've said it before, and I'll say it again: make yourself aware of your resources. I knew SCCs were the way to go, but I had no idea BU had one. Oops. Well, I also think they could do a better job advertising 😜 . I'm still glad I've got the data about the first run, because I'll be publishing several technical articles related to data processing in my dissertation. I can provide scholars who lack these resources with an understanding of what they're getting themselves into. . Better for me, I'm able to run several versions of the same analysis, using multiple distances between observers, and will publish the differences between those results. Basically, I'll be able to answer my research questions, and also determine if using significantly more detailed observer coverage is worth the processing time.

6 tags and 0 profile in descriptionToday we're looking at Boyle's Law, which tells us how volume and pressure are related. This illustration has several parts: the box, and the substance in the box (a gas). The law basically says that even if the temperature in the box doesnt change, and the amount of substance in the box also doesnt change, if the size of the box Decreases, then the pressure inside Increases. It seems kind of obvious that if you force a balloon to become smaller without letting out air, youre increasing the inside pressure, right? Well, this is only the beginning! Stay tuned for tomorrow! 12 tags and 0 profile in descriptionSHOULD YOU KEEP THOSE EGGS ON YOUR PLATE? 👀🍳 ✨ I attended a seminar on 🍳 at #DAA2018 conferencee last Friday. Since a lot of you voted yes to knowing more about the latest research, I thought I would do a post on it 🤓 Here is what we know 🍳 📌 eggs are an economical and nutrient rich food 🥚 📌eggs contain 11 of the essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, E and B12, as well as antioxidants, choline and lutein 🍳 📌 eggs can play a significant role in a vegetarian diet as they contain high quality protein, vitamin B12, iron and omega-3s 🥚 ✨ 📌 the advice in Australia has been to consume up to 6 eggs per week. However, recommendations around the world have been much higher. ✨ 📌 the latest Australian study (DIABEGG) looked at the of high-egg diet on cardiovascular risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes. ✨ 📌 it was a randomised controlled trial. This essentially meant that people either got a ⬆️🍳 diet OR ⬇️🍳 ✨ 📌 the main findings from the study was no change in cardiovascular risk factors when compared between the two groups ✔️ ✨ 📌 they looked at a range of measures which included blood pressure, pulse, body fat, weight, total body fat and waist, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol) and novel markers to measure vascular and systemic inflammation 💉 ✨ 👉🏼 what does it mean for me? “A healthy diet based on population guidelines and including more eggs than currently recommended by some countries may be safely consumed.” 🤓🙌🏼 This means it may be safe to include eggs in your diet more regularly (even if you are at risk of type 2 diabetes or have type two diabetes) 🥚🍳✔️ ✨ If you want to know more about the published research or read the media release. Send me a DM or find the link to the paper here https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/advance-article/doi/10.1093/ajcn/nqy048/4992612 ✨ Made it all the way to the end? We were totally surrounded by thick fog Tuesday morning a couple of weeks ago near Point Williams on Puget Sound during a routine marine sampling run on SoundGuardian. The sequence of honks you just heard (1 prolonged followed by 2 short blasts) was our skipper advising other ships in the area that SoundGuardian was restricted in her ability to maneuver as we worked with the CTD, a special instrument that is lowered hundreds of feet down into Puget Sound to collect water quality data and samples. This is what she has to say . . Decontamination is the process of removal of possible germs or harmful substances present from an area/object/person . . Decontaminating the samples is very important when you are working in a molecular laboratory. Decontamination helps to eliminate the germs that could interfere with the purity of the sample . . Here you can see a decontamination carried out using UV radiation. Prior to this step, decontamination was carried out using treating the sample and non disposable equipments using domestic chlorex and 70% ethanol . . This was carried out to ensure minimal contamination since aDNA has a high probability for contamination . . 7 tags and 0 profile in descriptionI have just recently started using twitter properly and I want to use it as a platform to raise awareness. At the beginning I was afraid to share my #PhD experience, you know will I get that reference, will I get a job if I am too vocal, will my voice be silenced by that group of my colleagues who made my life a hell for two years in a row, will those professors who I so much respected look down on me and judge me etc _ However I didn't study all these years to end up working for a company with no ethos. I didn't remain true to myself for nothing during a hard time in my life where even my loved ones didn't think I would make it. They would say:" People in your situation don't get out of it, they are all against you" but guess what I got the damn degree, I got the damn doctorate and if people 'above' have issues with me speaking about the reality of #academia then I will do my own thing. There will always be people who will listen. _ Until now I still have some anxiety, trust me it was worse during my writing time. I remember I was reported 3 times at the least to the head of department even when I wasn't around uni ... I was told I was disrupting things and was not allowed to come in even when I had the right to, because it was the right thing to do, I get it that was the easiest course of action. What did those colleagues who sabotaged my experiments and did everything in their power to make me fail get, nothing! I keep on thinking to myself will I get myself in that situation again if I get a job? Will I be able to go through it etc. I guess now I know how to handle it because I spoke up when I had to. _ Yes it was worth it but it wasn't all roses and flowers and there is way more to the story than just my colleagues. Ultimately, my passion for my project and my family kept me sane and very few who I now call friends _ Don't be afraid to speak up, all that hard work wasn't done for nothing! #academia #mentalhealth #phdadvice #phdtips #diversityinacademia
