22 tags and 1 profile in descriptionYour brain could be playing tricks on your waistline! New research led by Jason Bell from the School of Psychological Science at @universitywa has found a mechanism which may be acting on our body image perceptions. This mechanism is called 'serial dependence' and is a trick your mind plays to help you cope with change. It is a bias that when looking at yourself, rather than taking the current image of your body as is, we will generate a perception of our body as a sum of current and previous versions. These findings could have important implications for weight loss approaches, eating disorders and mental health treatments. For more on this, please visit our website: 'Looking Good? 9 tags and 0 profile in descriptionHere's the electron microscope I've worked on for most of my PhD so far - the JEOL 2010F! The long vertical tube is basically a stack of lenses, to magnify whatever sample I want to see. The open box in the middle is where the sample goes. The second image is the same holder - the is the tool that helps me put my samples into the microscope! The tiny circle in the third image is my sample. It's made of copper, and had a very thin layer of carbon on it. On top of the carbon layer, I dropped some gold nanoparticles. The whole thing is 3 mm across. The fourth image is a low magnification image of one region of my sample. This is a bright - field image, so the colors are reversed from the dark-field image I posted a few weeks ago. The real fun, though, is when you zoom in.... And you see atoms! Well, kind of. The fifth image is up close and personal - a magnification of 800,000. Three dark regions are gold nanoparticles, and inside each of them you can see tiny dots. Each dot is a column of atoms! This is one thing I love about electron microscopes - you can visualize atoms very directly! #electronmicroscopy #electronmicroscope #transmissionelectronmicroscopy #transmissionelectronmicroscope #jeol #scicomm #atoms #quantumphysics #electron

"What I love most about this quote by Karen Blixen (who was an absolute badass babe btw!) is that it always reminds me how humans are 70 % saltwater, plus some feelings and thoughts. On a biochemical level, we're a lot of ocean, each of us - and that thought is somehow very calming. . This piece was created for @steamotype 's Ocean & Reef Awareness week: as oceans are on the receiving end of many human-made pollution problems, it is essential that we look a bit further than cleaning the beaches! So, spread the word, annoy your local policy makers, and if you can afford it, maybe donate for the cause 🐳 . . (Also, I am absolutely aware that there are countless issues of physical and mental health that cannot be treated with saltwater of any kind. Imagine, that your life is a bottle and you fill it with small hearts, which are your days. You'll be surprised how small their quantity in comparison with the bottle. Yes, it's hard to cut each piece of the paper separatel, like it's hard to live each day. But it's just a small volume of your bottle, as it's a small volume of your life. 18 tags and 0 profile in descriptionI have to challenge the suggestion that scientists feel that more availability of / access to ‘human’ or personal data creates a better decision making environment, and that more data is somehow better for everyone. This is my own academic and professional field, and as someone who has worked with Deans, Profs and Directors across fundamental science, clinical research and social research, as well as health and social policy makers for 20 years, I know that few of those would agree that more is better. Better is better. BEAUTY . Pictured above is an English daisy (Bellis perennis) found at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, WA on April 21st, 2018. . My plant diversity class had the unique opportunity to meet with a philosophy class to discuss conservation/restoration efforts and clear out invasive species. A philosophy student asked me, “Why are invasive species considered bad?” I responded, “Well I happen to find beauty in all life, but there are some reasonable concerns about invasive species driving out native plants.” During this conversation, we were all pulling out nipplewort plants, which are considered invasive. As a student was reaching out to pull more invasive plants, I noticed a Pacific bleeding heart, and I quickly stopped him. He then asked me, “Why is this plant more important than that one?” I thought about it for a few seconds, and I then responded, “Well protecting these native plant populations helps maintain the beautiful habitat that we see here on campus, but that’s not to say that the beauty of invasive plants cannot be appreciated.” Someone else said, “If both are beautiful, why don’t we keep both of them?” I responded, “That’s a great question for each of us to think about and truly consider when wandering around nature.” . I have always felt uncomfortable calling things “invasive,” and after this question, I really started thinking about nature and the course it takes. What if we humans force plants to become invasive? One thing is certain about the diversity of life, it is always evolving and trying to survive. Habitats also, naturally, evolve and the species who occupy them change. We humans interfere with this process by changing our environment or physically introduce plants. This allows new species to drive out our native plants. Plants, both native and invasive, are just fighting to survive, and we put them in a position that may force them to become “invasive.” . What are your thoughts on this? Comment below!

28 tags and 0 profile in descriptionLast week we introduced Dr. Bianca Scolaro. She sent us a very nice picture and description about freezing cells. Here is what she has to say "Everything ready in the cell culture hood to freeze some cells. We use cryopreservation to store cells, so that we don’t need to maintain cell cultures all the time. Cells are aliquoted in cryovials and preserved in liquid nitrogen (-196 degrees) when all biological activity stops. Isn’t it crazy to think that something that was frozen can be brought back to live? That’s only possible because of the addition of cryoprotectants to our cells suspension. A cryoprotectant - in this case DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) - is a substance used to protect biological tissues from damage, by preventing the formation of ice crystals. For example, when strawberries are freeze and then thawed, they become mushy and watery. That’s because when water freezes, it expands and forms ice crystals that cause the cell walls to rupture. The success of cryopreservation of cells (and resuscitation) depends on slow freeze and quick thaw. When freezing fruits and vegetables, however, freezing process should be as quick as possible. By doing that, the size of ice crystals that are formed will be smaller and consequently less damage will be observed after your food product is thawed - although it will never be the same as it was when fresh/raw. Scientists were not yet able to re-animate frozen human bodies, although some people have already paid $$$ to be cryopreserved. What do you think? Will science ever be able to wake them up?" Thank you Bianca for telling us about the importance of cryopreservation. We look forward to learning more from you . . . . . #freezing #cryopreservation #cells #cellculture #cellculturelab #cryovial #liquidnitrogen #cryoprotectant #dmso #dimethylsulfoxide #biologicaltissue #tissue #tissueculture #thawing #scientists #nonscientists #youngstudents #students #womenempowerment #womeninstem #stemwomen #stemgirls #girlpower #girlsinstem #theaddictivebrain #brazilianscience #brazilianscientists #scienceexperiment

Happy birthday to Sally Ride! 🚀Sally Ride was not only a physicist⚛️, the first known LGBT astronaut🌈, the youngest American in space and the first American woman in space 👩🏼‍🚀(1982 at age 32), but she was a trailblazer and true visionary🙌🏼. When applying to be a NASA astronaut Sally had no idea of the icon she would become, she just wanted to go to space🌌. ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I never went into physics or the astronaut corps to become a role model. But after my first flight, it became clear to me that I was one. And I began to understand the importance of that to people. Young girls need to see role models in whatever careers they may choose, just so they can picture themselves doing those jobs someday. You can’t be what you can’t see." -SR❤️

0 tag and 1 profile in descriptionBeautifully repost from @omgshecodes . . However, physical fast is not about food and drink only! It's a challenge to many of your physical natural needs, such as having intercourse. And we have to differentiate between things that, when doing them, will break your fast and things that don't but yet are recommended to resist. - The latter can be personalized as some sort of "Ramadan goals". One of my goals e.g. is to buy stuff only when I need it and rather give this money to the needy. I was SO tempted to buy some cute stuff online the other day but, as part of my Ramadan goals, I managed to resist which I still can't believe cuz these Kimonos were just uhhhhh😰 - But here's the thing: it's an overwhelming feeling to have FULL CONTROL over yourself, especially in times where we are brainwashed on a daily basis. Just think about your shopping experience for a second. There's not a single shop out there that does not play any music- but why? Well, it is supposed to put us in a good mood and imagine scenarios where we could wear that cute top so we are more likely to buy it. But in Ramadan, you take greater control of your mind and not buy it because the top's production may also not be ethical etc. - Having full control over your body on the other hand refers to these moments when there's a bawling heat outside and you see everyone around you drinking but you still DO NOT GIVE IN out of pure submission to God - it's crazy and beautiful and you feel upraised! You really begin to realise that your will is much stronger than your body! - Now let's get to the mental side because Ramadan is by far way more than merely staying away from food and drink. - Another narration of Prophet Muhammad pbuh. says that "many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst." This is because we fast with not only our stomach, but also with our heart, mind and just all of our senses. - It is fasting that makes us more aware of how we lead our lives and, in the best case, makes us get rid of the bad habits such as using fool language, lying, betraying, smoking, getting angry etc. It is a chance to better ourselves physically and emotionally.

0 tag and 2 profiles in descriptionBeautifully written by @omgshecodes : . . There's this widely spread misconception about Ramadan which says that Muslims fast out of empathy to those in need. Well, let me start off this post by breaking it to you: that's not the case. I mean, indeed it is a means for us to really appreciate and be grateful for what God has given us but the main reason out of all reasons - or side effects I'd like to call them - is: because God prescribed it on us as well as the nations before us (including Jews and Christians), simple as that. And since we believe Him to be the Most Wise, we follow along. Only now we can discuss all the positive impacts fasting has on one's life. - So what's with this month where Muslims have to perform hour-long fasts and even look forward to it? Doesn't this sound like pure torture!!? Generally speaking there are two sides to fasting: the physical side as well as the mental side, so let's start with the first one. - You may know that fasting is a real cure to the body, especially when you're ill. It is scientifically proven that it has great positive effects on the body and to be completely honest, it just seems to be unhealthy or weird to some because of the throwaway and wasteful society we live in. Once you're fasting, you really can feel with all of your body how LITTLE you actually need in order to feel good and energized b/c at the end of the day, it is food that makes you lazy and sleepy due to digestion. I mean, my husband even visits the gym during Ramadan which sounds even crazy to me haha. - I myself usually have only a smoothie plus a big bowl of salad for breaking my fast (arab. 'Iftar') and I'm good to go - which, again, might sound crazy to some people because most Muslims have whole feasts for their Iftar, believing they need to catch up on every single meal they have missed throughout the day when in fact they completely miss the point of fasting. - There's a saying of Prophet Muhammad pbuh. that goes like "The son of Adam [i.e. man] fills no container worse than his stomach… one third of the stomach is for food, one third for drink, and one third for air.” . . 📸 by @omgshecodes

20 tags and 0 profile in descriptionLighting up the grill this weekend? We're going to be bringing you a few tips to make the most out of your Memorial Day grilling sessions. Have you ever wondered what makes red meat red? Though it may seem like the obvious answer, our meats aren’t getting their brilliant hue from blood. Steaks are made up of slow-twitch cow muscles, which means that they’re used for long periods of time and use a lot of energy - so walking for example. To compensate, a protein called myoglobin helps store oxygen inside the cells of the muscle for a consistent energy supply. As it turns out, this protein has a very pronounced red pigment. The more myoglobin in the meat, the darker and deeper the red will be. You may have noticed that vacuum sealed steaks have a grayish tint to them. The lack of oxygen inside means a lack of fuel for myoglobin. Once you open that package and expose it to oxygen, the surface of the meat will get back at least some of that reddish-pinkish tint. #science #chemistry #scicomm #foodscience #foodchemistry #meat #grilling #steaks #burgers #cow #redmeat #blood #muscles #myoglobin #compounds #molecules #oxygen #memorialday #grill #memorialdayweekend

When you throw your steak on the grill, myoglobin starts to transform. At temperatures above 60 degrees celsius (140F), myoglobin can’t hold on to oxygen anymore, and shifts to a tan color. Once your steak hits 76°C (169F), myoglobin goes through another transformation where it turns a greyish dark brown. But that’s not the only thing that changes your steaks color. The levels of hemichrome increase, and the remaining myoglobin turns into the greyish brown metmyoglobin. #science #chemistry #scicomm #foodscience #foodchemistry #meat #grilling #steaks #burgers #cow #redmeat #blood #muscles #myoglobin #compounds #molecules #oxygen #memorialday #grill #memorialdayweekend #temperatures #meattemperatures #metmyoglobin #hemichrome

10 tags and 3 profiles in descriptionToday we're looking at #gators 🐊 More specifically giant fossil caimans many times larger than their modern relatives! . Here is the skull of Purussaurus brasiliensis, one of the largest fossil crocodyliformes known to date! These beasts thrived in Central and South America in the Middle and Late Miocene (~16-5.3 million years ago). Recent studies estimate adults could reach lengths of 12.5 meters, weigh around 8.4 metric tons, and were capable of sustained bite forces of 69,000 N (~7 metric tons of force)[1]! . . As a graduate student at @uflorida and the @floridamuseum I see gators constantly whether they be fossils, live animals, statues, or fellow students! Even when I'm visiting my home state of California I can't seem to get away from them!
