"Honey bees, however, have occasionally been documented to die from rhododendron nectar, due to the presence of the chemical, once further concentrated in honey, can also be lethal to humans. This phenomenon has been described since early times, such as a famous mass poisoning of the Persian army in 401 BCE after soldiers supposedly consumed rhododendron honey." (The Xerces Society. 2016. 100 Plants to Feed the Bees) "Small shrub [blooms] summer [in] bogs of west coast and Blue Mountains. L. glandulosum is reported as a source of honey in British Columbia but apparently of little value to bes in Oregon. Tall shrub [blooms] May and June [in] moist, cool mountain habitat to sea level. But did you know that bees are not the only ones that sustain life on earth? 🌻 By carrying pollen from one flower to another, bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators facilitate and improve food production, thus contributing to food security and nutrition. 🌼 Pollination also has a positive impact on the environment in general, helping to maintain biodiversity and the vibrant ecosystems upon which agriculture depends. 🌻 Be sure to include some of these plants in your garden to ensure the bees have plenty of pollen to sample this summer! 🌼 #worldbeeday #pollinators #plantsforbees #buzzbuzzbuzz #nobeesnofood #beehappy #important #savethebees (Info from fao.org)

0 tags and 0 profiles in descriptionOne of the surprises this May has been the intensity of fragrance from the tiny purple flower of the Pittosporum evergreen shrub. Beloved by bumble bees 🐝 - they hang out in the hedge like DJs sharing their tunes. 8 plants came as little seedlings from my parents hedge. I planted them with the idea of a semi circular hedge as part of the wind breaker layer for the back door & patio. Sheep 🐑 broke in to the garden a few years ago they enjoyed all but 2 plants. They have finally become a hedge and because they are beside the washing line we tend to notice activity there. About 2 weeks ago the intense fragrance infused the air in late afternoon drawing us towards it. An understated performer in the garden. I planted Queen of the night Tulips in front of the hedge this year - works well to pop the colour. Swipe right!

Fazit: Der perfekte Zierstrauch für jeden Garten ————————————————————-🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 In spring it enriches the garden with its lush white-pink flowers and is a good source of food for bees. It is also a good pollinator for fruitapples and thus ensures a good yield. In late summer until late autumn the small apples offer a wonderful fruit decoration. Another highlight is added in autumn: a golden yellow autumn colouring. The crabapple is undemanding, it grows about 3-5 m high and wide and is very compatible with pruning. One thing is for sure though is that trout lily flowers surely live up to the name ephemeral. They have already blossomed in mass and the flowers have faded in about a week. The next phase of the grand awakening of mayapples and larkspurs has swept up the attention on the stage of the forest floor. These impressive plants can take up to 7 years to produce one short lived single flower. A flower that lasts 3-5 days. I always find it fascinating to think about how old an organism we take for granted actually is. This long window of being reproductively immature is important to think about next time you bend down to pick that beautiful flower and walk with it in the park for ten minutes before dropping its limp body to the ground in abandonment and boredom. Imagine if you waited for 7 years at a chance to reproduce and it got taken away from you in a moment.

14 tags and 0 profiles in descriptionThis is lovely Lamb's Ear, also known as Woolly Hedgenettle (swoon), which is native to Turkey, Armenia, and Iran. It is now cultivated throughout the world as a garden plant but has escaped in some places and has become naturalised here and there. We are lucky enough to have a patch on the field where the 1,000 year church community hall stands. Lamb's Ear is often grown in children's gardens, as it is so easy to cultivate and soft to the touch, but it also has a range of medicinal uses. It has been used for centuries as a wound dressing on battlefields, not only because its soft leaves absorb blood but also because it has clotting, antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has also been used in a range of other ways, including as a tea to help with fevers, sore throats, internal bleeding, and liver and heart weakness. The juice from its bruised leaves can be used on insect bites and stings, it's young leaves can be eaten fresh in a salad or gently steamed, and it has even occasionally been used as toilet paper! My favourite thing about Lamb's Ear though is its relationship with bees. Not only do they adore the pollen of its inconspicuous little flowers, but males wool carder bees claim the plants as their territories and jealously guard them so that the females bees can gather soft hairs to line their nests; shaving the hairs from the leaves, carrying them back to her nest under her abdomen, before carding them together to line and seal her brood cells. Such a nurturing mother of a little plant. Swaddling for bruised and wounded spirits and a blanket for baby bees. #hedgetemple #smallbeauties #kerbgarden #landorroad #stockwell #southlondon #london #community #communitygardens #lambsear #stachysbyzantina #bees #plantsforbees #woolcarderbees

Not an instant giver in the floral stakes (it will take 20 or so years to flower 😂) but when it does it will offer a little bit of bee heaven 👌🏼 Happy Friday all !#futuregenerations #plantforthefuture #patience #goodthingscometothosewhowait #plantlife #treelife #treeplanting #beefriendlygarden #plantsforbees #treesforbees #savethebees #wildfood #forager #pollinators #permaculture #growyourown #sustainableliving #gardening #nurture #nature #wildfolk #naturegarden #pollinatorgarden #heaven #nectar #beekeeping #bees #apiary #honeybee #sussex

This wonderfully fragrant flower is not only loved by pollinators, it has many uses outside of the garden and can be used for cooking, herbal teas and potpourri. Lavender oil is known to reduce stress, aid sleep, relieve pain and has anti-inflammatory qualities for things such as insect bites 💜
