As soon as weight goes on the bar during deadlifts or overhead pressing, for example, athletes lose form and let their heads shift excessively forward - which greatly increases your chance of a “tweak” or nagging neck pain. “Hold a tennis ball,” “pack the neck”, “make a double chin,” whichever cue works best for you, keep that head neutral! With this being said there are many variations to a squat other than just a weighted barbell squat. With my client we've been gradually working towards a barbell squat. Here's a couple of the dynamic assessments (Overhead squat & Kettle bell dead lift) that I used to initially check his movement. He's progressed since these videos but I feel that these videos serve as a better learning tool because you can see some of the dysfunction within the kinetic chain. We did an overhead squat assessment with a PVC pipe and a kettle bell dead lift assessment. • As I stated the kinetic chain, movement and breathing pattern of the client will tell you a alot. • Performing these assessments prior to loading up the bar for squats can provide you with valuable information that will reduce the risk of injury. Along with musculature stability and postural control, dysfunctional movement patterns can also be identified. • YOUR TRAINER SHOULD KNOW ALL OF THIS! • Most common cause of injury is a previous injury in the same region and the SECOND most common cause of injury is asymmetrical movement pattern.
