Krishnan (1967-2016) “As he grew in confidence and his coffers grew, his canvases became bigger and his works found positions in top galleries, homes and museums across the world. While his works went all over (Singapore Art Fair, India Art Fair, New York to name a few), he made a conscious choice to remain rooted to the land he was born and bred in. The subjects of his heart remained true to the soil, the images that had enriched his life as a child and as a young man. The mango, the sparrow, the jack fruit tree, the pineapple, the railway track, the red flags, the protestors in demonstrations, Marx…Kerala remained important to him.” (Excerpt via The Hindu)

They love their beans here too. Saw about 8 species so far. Saw a strange looking fruit called Obiarjin or something. That's the big red fruit in the slides. Not sure we got the name right. The locals couldn't give me a good name too. So strange, they forgot to name it. 😀. If you know the name, please let's know. Some bags of passion fruits were on display. It's seems to be the most popular fruit here. 😁😉. Took a motor bike ride then a bicycle ride then a motor bike ride again. Bicycle rides are huge here. Saw a man riding a lady yesterday and I thought that was so romantic. 😃. Didn't realize he was hard at work. 😅. Surprisingly bicycle rides are way cheaper. Why am I surprised? It burns a lot of energy that needs to be replaced too. Do we value our efforts less and fuel as a commodity more. Just thinking. 🤔 I almost forgot. Ran into some artefacts made of cow horns. You see them too? The company is aptly called "Cow Horns Rwanda". They are on Instagram as @cowhornsrwanda . No surprise there. 😁. So you can get some horns. Hope they pay me for the free publicity someday. 😏 Not a bad market day in all. Everyone is working hard to keep Rwanda beautiful. #artfacts #fruits #tourism #cows #cowhorn #cowhorns #passionfruits #passion #beans #species #markets #market #rwanda

0 tags and 0 profiles in descriptionПочему важно изучать искусство?

8 tags and 0 profiles in description#FlashArtFact : A True and Total Art Movement⠀ •⠀ A movement that experienced a 20-year shelf life, Art Nouveau (translated in English to ‘new art’ but never called that cuz, uh, vague?!) 🧐 was an international style of art and architecture of truly mega proportions. 🤯⠀ •⠀ Its Name fact. In 1895 art dealer Siegfried Bing opened a gallery and named it the Maison de l'Art Nouveau. There was no intent to name the movement after the gallery. It was simply a hub -- what Bing called “a rallying point for all the … artists impatient to show the modernity of their tendencies.”👩‍🎨👨‍🎨⠀ •⠀ About Flora fact. Art Nouveau was called different things depending where you were. Named after flowers in France, Tiffany in the U.S., noodles and whiplash in Belgium, waves and lilies in Germany and eels in the Netherlands, the basic indicators of the style were its focus on the organic forms of plants and flowers, from the stems to the buds to every serpentine line in between.🌱🌾🌷🌹🥀⠀ •⠀ Everywhere fact. The style was truly international. From Britain and France and practically every country in Europe to the U.S., the Ukraine and Russia, it was everywhere. 🌎🌍🌏⠀ •⠀ Fever Pitch fact. By the time the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle rolled around, Art Nouveau was at its peak and 50 million visitors passed through the exhibition halls in just 8 months to take it all in. 😮🤩🙌⠀ •⠀ Name in Print fact. So how did Art Nouveau spread so fast? 🤔 New tech in printing and publishing allowed the style to reach a worldwide audience. Key art mags popped up and spread the (visual) word. Illustrators’ careers were made as in Alphonse Mucha and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Advertising followed suit and posters became high art. 😎🔥⠀ •⠀ En Totale fact. It also helped that Art Nouveau was a total art movement. It ran strong from 1890 to 1910 and spilled over to influence the fine and decorative arts, architecture, jewelry, furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass- and metalworks. With that kind of influence, is it any wonder it is one if not the most beloved and widespread art movements of all time?💗💯⠀ #arthistory #artnouveau #myartistsnetwork #artfacts #flowerpower #worldart #artistsnetwork

Pictured, “Kufa Gate 1968” named after an Iraqi city, located near the south of Baghdad, which Stella visited when he traveled throughout the Middle East and Asia in the 1960s. Music, “Pavane, Op. 50”. • ARTIST BACKGROUND (via Wikipedia) Frank Philip Stella (born May 12, 1936) is an American painter, sculptor and printmaker, noted for his work in the areas of minimalism and post-painterly abstraction. Stella lives and works in New York City. • In the 1960s, Stella began to use a wider range of colors, typically arranged in straight or curved lines. Later he began his Protractor Series (71) of paintings, in which arcs, sometimes overlapping, within square borders are arranged side-by-side to produce full and half circles painted in rings of concentric color. These paintings are named after circular cities he had visited while in the Middle East earlier in the 1960s. The Irregular Polygon canvases and Protractor series further extended the concept of the shaped canvas.

ARTIST BACKGROUND (via Pace Gallery) “David Hockney (b. 1937, Bradford, United Kingdom) has produced some of the most vividly recognizable images of this century. Hockney’s ongoing exploration of figuration and abstraction reveals a fundamental interest in the representation of pictorial space. His aesthetic pursuits stretch across a vast range of media, from the traditions of painting and printmaking to full-scale opera stagings, photographic collage, and the incorporation of digital technologies such as fax machines, video, and iPads. Spanning practice and theory, Hockney’s investigation of artistic techniques has also developed through art-historical research, resulting in Secret Knowledge (2001), his publication on the optical devices used by the Old Masters, as well as A History of Pictures: From the Cave to the Computer Screen (2016), written in collaboration with art critic Martin Gayford and further exploring the many ways artists have pictured the world.” #davidhockney

ARTIST BACKGROUND (via Wikipedia) “Louise Joséphine Bourgeois (1911 – 2010) was a French-American artist. Although she is best known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art, Bourgeois was also a prolific painter and printmaker. She explored a variety of themes over the course of her long career including domesticity and the family, sexuality and the body, as well as death and the subconscious. These themes connect to events from her childhood which she considered to be a therapeutic process. Although Bourgeois exhibited with the Abstract Expressionists and her work has much in common with Surrealism and Feminist art, she was not formally affiliated with a particular artistic movement.”

3 tags and 0 profiles in description"Whoever renders directly and authentically that which impels him to create, is one of us". - Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who was born on this day in 1880, wrote this in 1906 in the manifesto of Die Brücke ('The Bridge'), the later to be famous group of expressionist artists from Dresden. The artists of Die Brücke used bright colors and pointed shapes to depict the life in the city and summer leisure at the lakes nearby. The nude was a major subject. Fränzi here, is depicted in the artist's studio, in between his handmade furniture, paintings, drawings, tapestries and in front of a curtain designed by Kirchner. She is slightly blushing. Traces of Kirchner’s primitivism are present in the image: the nude points to the desire for social and sexual freedom. This painting fits into a series of artworks from 1909 to 1910 whereby Kirchner often incorporated his own artworks as background. - Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 'Nacktes Mädchen hinter vorhang (Fränzi)', 1910/1926 - #BornOnThisDay #artfacts #ErnstLudwigKirchner

Part of a generation of Chinese artists who grew up during a period of rapid urbanisation he has said that “I'm seeking to adjust and guide people's perception through the material changes within the object”, using a range of media to reflect on philosophic ideas such as the increasing materialism and obsolescence of our society as well as the effects of the institutionalisation and commercialisation of contemporary art.”

14 tags and 0 profiles in descriptionLet’s talk about etchings! Etchings are simply impressions typically made into a piece of paper. The medium for the etching technique is traditionally a copper plate, but a zinc plate is also used. The plate is coated with an acid-resistant ground. An etching needle is used to draw lines within the ground, which then exposes the metal. After the lines and details are created the plate is submerged in an acid bath and the metal that is exposed to the acid starts to erode, as the metal erodes engraved lines begin to appear. The stronger the acid and the longer the plate spends in the acid bath the deeper the lines. After the plate is removed from the acid and the ground is wiped away, ink is rolled into the sunken lines and the excess is removed from the surface. A piece of paper is then placed onto the plate and the two pass through a printing press, which places pressure to transfer ink from the recessed lines. The etching technique is extremely unique and awe-inspiring because of the amount of immense detail that can be worked into the plate. It certainly takes time and patience but the finished product is completely worth it. We’re happy to have the etchings of Gilbert Gorski as a part of our “City Limits Exhibition.” The details he captures in his small etchings are unbelievable. This is the last weekend to view “City Limits” in its entirety. The show will begin to come down this upcoming Tuesday, May 8th.
