"Detective Lindiwe Mutoma, 28, when photographed is a different kind of detective. Working in a male dominated profession, her successes are often the result of the freedom that comes from being invisible, unexpected, underestimated. When asked if it helps to be female in her line of work, Lindiwe answered yes: 'Before antagonizing a man you have to try seducing him. Men like confiding in women, but they also underestimate women. This helps as a detective.' . She often does little things to pick fights with people, especially men. 'Most men could learn from feeling put out once in a while,' she teases. A favorite tactic is removing her shoes and stretching her legs onto the other seats of buses. 'I want to stretch my legs' she tells one man who reacts as expected, twiddling her toes through the limited open air of the bus, 'Is that a crime?' . So, would she consider setting up her own agency, with the other women detectives? 'Sure,' she says, looking out of the bus window as we return into Lusaka. 'I'd love to. But that's not possible in real life. Money, there is no money.'" - Mikhael Subotzky (text based on an article by Benjamin Joffe-Walt, published in Telegraph Magazine, 2005) . 6 tags and 0 profile in descriptionConversations in Gondwana are pleased to announce the participation of the South African artist Mikhael Subotzky in the first edition of the project, invited to discuss "Crisis and Politics" together with the Brazilian artist Clara Ianni. Mikhael Subotzky’s works are the results of his fractured attempts to place himself in relation to the social, historical, and political narratives that surround him both at home in South Africa and on his frequent travels. As an artist working in film, video installation, and photography, as well as more recently in collage and painting, Subotzky engages critically with contemporary politics of representation. In “Beaufort West” (2006–08), a series he premiered at MoMA, Subotzky focuses on the Beaufort West Prison, juxtaposing the prisoners inside with residents of the neighboring towns, from sex workers to privileged suburbanites. Another series, “Ponte City” (2008–), depicts residents in the titular Johannesburg residential tower, opposing the claustrophobic, dystopian architecture with poignant scenes of family life taking place within. Subotzky’s works are at once highly introspective and revelatory of the systemic injustices wrought by South Africa’s colonialist legacy. South African, b. 1981, Cape Town, South Africa, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. (Photo: Mikhael Subotzky, Kaa-U-La Bird, 2017, oil and ink on canvas, 246 x 199.2cm x 10cm, courtesy Goodman Gallery) * Due to a change of schedule, it will no longer be possible to count on the participation of Kemang Wa Lehulere in the first edition of the project. #conversationsingondwana #conversasemgondwana #mikhaelsubotzky #artproject #southsouth #sulsul

17 tags and 0 profile in descriptionSantu Mofokeng is known for his black-and-white photographs of life in South Africa’s black communities, images he calls meditations on “existential madness—the absurdities of living.” Mofokeng first picked up a camera in the 1980s as a street photographer, while working in the darkroom for newspapers. In 1986, he made his first independent pieces and began work on what he considers photographic essays - many of which continue as ongoing projects. His subjects and themes have included his hometown Soweto, impoverishment in urban and rural centers, spirituality, self-representation and family history, and landscapes with political undertones about ownership and power. . #Africa #art #design #artist #NicholasHlobo #PieterHugo #WilliamKentridge #MohauModisakeng #NtoneEdjabe #SantuMofokeng #MarySibande #PennySiopis #MikhaelSubotzky #MatthewWild #AchilleMbembe #AshrafJamal #SisonkeMsimang

It Ain’t Where You’re From It’s Where You’re At . 16th January 2018 . Ekow Eshun in conversation with Ashraf Jamal . Ashraf Jamal: Congratulations on editing the first book on Zeitz MOCAA. How did you come to nurse this project into being? Ekow Eshun: The first, important thing to say is that Africa Modern is not a book about the museum. It takes the opening of the first major art museum in Africa as its starting point and develops from there but it’s published independently of the museum itself. The book came about when I was talking to Thomas Heatherwick, the architect of MOCAA earlier this year. He was excited about his work on the museum but also keen that it not be seen in isolation of its surroundings. So we started talking about a book that would explore the cultural landcsape the museum has emerged from, ie the fantastically rich art and cultural scene in South Africa, and across the African continent as a whole. The aim was to try and get a breadth of creative voices involved and, in a small way, paint a portrait of what seems to me to be a particularly dynamic moment in African contemporary art. With that goal in mind, we got philanthropic support from the wonderful Lady Linda Davies, whose charitable organisation the KT Wong Foundation published the book. And Wallpaper magazine also got involved to do the art direction. So, a great coalition. What I’m really excited about are the artistic contributions to the book. A number of South Africa’s leading artists created exclusive visual projects including Pieter Hugo, Nicholas Hlobo, Mohau Modisakeng, Penny Siopis, Frances Goodman, Mikhael Subotzky, Mary Sibande and more. I gave them ten pages each and only two weeks to deliver and they all came through. It was amazingly generous of them. And there are some great, insightful essays too, from the likes of Achille Mbembe, Sisonke Msimang, Ngugi we Thiong’o – and not least, yourself Ashraf.
